Computer-mediated Communication (CMC)

Hi, Assalamualaikum!

I have promised to elaborate more on Computer-mediated Communication (CMC) on my previous post so I can't delay that and gotta do it soon after. After all, CMC is something that is close with us and it is not that complicated despite the name itself so I am going to explain it short and sweet. Let's get into it!

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) would be defined as any individual interaction by the use of two or more electronic devices. Although the term has historically known to these interactions that exist through computer-based formats (e.g. instant messaging, email, chat rooms, web forums, social networking sites), it has now been extended to other means of text-based contact such as text messaging.

Computer-mediated communication can be divided into two types:

  • Synchronous: The interaction happens in real time. All parties are engaging in the conversation at the same time; even so, not all parties are usally at the same place. For example, FaceTime video and audio calls, even the most popular app now which is Google Meet or Zoom chat.
  • Asynchronous: The interaction that takes place where the parties involved do not interact in sync. That is to say, the sender would not expect an immediate reply from the recipient. Most types of computer-mediated technologies are asynchronous but the examples are text messages and emails.
So those above sound like something familiar right? Something that is so common with us because it is no doubt that all of us have experienced of using the technologies. Now you can go brag to your friends with this term ehehe just kidding! Keep this new knowledge in your mind, it might be useful one day, who knows?

See you next post. Toodles!

XOXO
